Civil Disobedience - In A Few Hours of Madness - 7-inch
Civil Disobedience formed in Michigan around 1992. Their demo tape sold several hundred copies through Profane Existence mail order. I saw Civil Disobedience when they opened for Destroy in Detroit. The 7 which resulted is arguably Civil Disobedience's best material. Powerful hardcore with speed and power but not exactly thrash. The two vocalists switch back and forth rapid fire. I would compare this to Conflict around Ungovernable Force but really its totally unique.

From Stuttgart, Germany, Clusterbombunit plays brutal Dis-core which reminds me a lot of Discharge's Why? 12 with maybe more added crunch and brutality. CBU has a 7 and 10 on Thought Crime Records from Berlin and a long out of print split flexi with Resist. They have done European and US tours. This 7 was recorded two years ago for Pushead's label and finally sees the light of day on Havoc. CBU is one of my absolute favorite bands of the 90's and probably the best band I saw live in Europe (well, tied with DS 13). CBU released a new LP on Tribal War Asia in the summer of 2001.

Code 13 - A Part of America Died Today - 7-inch
After several tours across America Code 13 suffered its first major line-up change when drummer Criminal Shane was arrested and incarcerated in Wisconsin. Josh from the band Inveigh was recruited to fill in and would end up staying with the band for a year, two tours and a 7. Fast powerful hardcore period. Over the years Code 13 has become part of a burgeoning scene in Minneapolis. To show our appreciation to the kids who have supported us we did 100 copies on clear vinyl with a screenprinted camouflage cover for our record release show. This 7 has gotten really good reviews from the underground press. The main criticism seems to be the eclectic mix of styles (which could alternately be considered a plus) and the juvenile topics of the lyrics (skateboarding and comic books). However, closer examination will reveal that there is a deeper message herein. Since this recording Josh and Inveigh moved to LA and we recruited Mitch Useless of Servitude (Murderers, Destroy, Cirrhosis, etc) on drums.

Conflict - Standard Issue II 88-94 - CD
The follow-up, of course, to the earlier Standard Issue: Singles Compiled compilation, but with less emphasis on the band's singles output (which had, in any case, slowed to a trickle), Standard Issue, Vol. 2: '88-'94 rounds up six years of Conflict, and then gives them a tight Colin Jerwood remix. The subtitled suggestion that the set covers the years 1988-1994 is misleading -- the opening cuts, after all, date from 1986's The Ungovernable Force, while the same year's Only Stupid Bastards Help EMI and 1987's Turning Rebellion into Money live albums also get a look in. From there, it's a relatively straightforward cherrypicking of highlights from Final Conflict, Against All Odds, Conclusion and It's Time to See Who's Who, a parade that certainly reflects one possible "best-of" Conflict, although it's not necessarily one that everyone would all agree with -- Standard Issue: Singles Compiled, with its tight focus on 45s, is a far more cohesive set, both thematically and musically...

Burly heavy crust from Houston, Texas. A lot of influences from early swedish death metal. I can hear some Entombed and Dismember. It's got a lot of anthemy choruses. This was made when they had TJ from Humanicide in the band. Very insurrectionist lyrics as conveyed through "Storming the Whitehouse", and "Fuck Cop Sympathy". I'd say they blend crust with some thrash metal and scandi-death metal and thus the core of the music has a very metallic feel to it. And they even throw in some d-beat parts. ...the sound has progressed (regressed) into a more early 80's raw thrash sound. The guitars are less distorted and grindy sounding than the early releases. This gives the album a sort of raw intensity that allows the songwriting and energy to come out full force rather than behind a wall of distorted noise. I would compare DS 13 to early 80's HC bands like Minor Threat, Poison Idea and such, but I really feel they have a distinct hardcore sound all their own.

Victims sound is obviously compared to Skitsystem, Wolpbrigade and other d-beat ragers from Scandinavia. However, I feel that Victims have more of a solid old school hardcore/thrash back bone whilst the aformentioned bands derive a lot more of their influence from Crust and Death Metal. Victims deliver 18 pummeling tracks of rage and power that will not disappoint any fan of the genre. Excellent production by Miezko of Nasum at Soundlab Studios.
